Existe una guerra ancestral, el premio de dicha guerra es el Santo Grial, esta joya es capaz de conceder cualquier deseo a la persona que la obtenga, sin importar cual sea. Para decidir quien es el más apto para ganar este privilegio, es el mismo grial quien elige a siete Masters (maestros) y a cada uno le otorga un Servant (sirviente).
Los Servants son avatares, héroes de la antigüedad, materializados gracias a los poderes del Grial. En total son siete, pertenecientes a siete razas (Saber, Archer, Lancer, Berserker, Assassin, Caster y Rider).
